1999 - The Year In Review

Last year Scott Swinsburg did a project called "Aero98: The Aerosmith Year In Review." (Which you can also read here at Rock This Way)

Well, since he got such a good response from it last year he figured he should do it this year as well. So...here is his presentation of "Aero99: The Aerosmith Year In Review":

JANUARY

1. Aerosmith announce on New Year's Day that they were pulling out of their Boston street club “Mama Kin” selling their interest to their partners, club owners Patrick Lyons and Ed Sparks.

2. Plans are announced for an Aerosmith Tribute album.

3. Aerosmith are nominated for three Grammy Awards...”Best Rock Performance, Duo Or Group With Vocal” and “Best Short Form Music Video” for “Pink.”...and “Best Pop Performance, Duo Or Group With Vocal” for “I Don't Want To Miss A Thing.” Diane Warren was also nominated for “Song Of The Year” and “Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television” for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” Also, “Elmopalooza!” [the album in which Steven Tyler did the track “I Love Trash.”] was nominated for "Best Musical Album For Children."

4. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry record the track “Roots, Rock, Reggae” for the album “Bob Marley: Chant Down Babylon.”

5. Aerosmith win their fifth American Music Award for "Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, Or Group" on Monday, January 11th.

6. Aerosmith’s autobiography “Walk This Way” is released on paperback.

7. A federal judge in Boston ruled that Aerosmith CAN be sued by 17 Costa Rican concertgoer’s for injuries they say they suffered when they were trampled during a November 1994 concert in their country's National Stadium...but not in a Massachusetts court. The judge rules that the trial must be held in Costa Rica...and that Aerosmith WOULD be bound by the decision of the Costa Rican court.

8. Aerosmith plays 3 full shows.

FEBRUARY

1. Woodstock '99 asks Aerosmith to perform.

2. The movie "Armageddon" is released on home video and includes the video for "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing."

3. Diane Warren is nominated for an Oscar for “Best Original Song From A Motion Picture” for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”

4. MTV Home Videos released "Celebrity Deathmatch Round 2." This Video includes the Steven Tyler vs. Mick Jagger match in which Steven lost on Tuesday, February 9th.

5. Mark Chestnutt releases a cover of "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing” on Tuesday, February 9th.

6. VH-1 airs the “Aerosmith Video Timeline” on Wednesday, February 10th.

7. Aerosmith are nominated for three Boston Music Awards...”Act Of The Year”, “Best Rock Band”, and “Best Video” for "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." Steven Tyler is also nominated for “Best Male Vocalist.”

8. Sony announces that their will be a video for "Full Circle."

9. Brad Whitford turns 47 on Tuesday, February 23rd.

10. Aerosmith wins one out of three Grammy’s by winning "Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal" for "Pink”...and losing “Best Short Form Music Video” and “Best Pop Performance, Duo Or Group With Vocal.” Diane Warren also loses “Song Of The Year” and “Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television.” But, “Elmopalooza!” [the album in which Steven Tyler did the track “I Love Trash.”] won for "Best Musical Album For Children." Aerosmith also performs “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” at the Grammy’s but the ear monitor’s malfunctioned and the boyz couldn’t hear themselves play.

11. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry show up at L.A.'s “Whisky A-Go-Go” to see Joe Perry's son Adrian play in his band Dexter.

MARCH

1. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry hopped up on stage to do a blazing rendition of "Walk This Way" with Run DMC at the “House Of Blues” in Los Angeles, California on Thursday, March 4th.

2. Steven Tyler sues his ex-wife Cyrinda in an attempt to make her return photographs taken of him in the nude.

3. It is announced that the movie "Clubland" [in which Steven Tyler plays a small role] will be released in theaters in very limited release on April 16th.

4. Diane Warren loses her Oscar nomination for “Best Original Song From A Motion Picture” for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” Aerosmith also perform a great version of “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” at the Oscar’s [after being introduced by Liv Tyler].

5. Aerosmith record the song "Blue Eyes Blue" for the "Runaway Bride" soundtrack album...but it will not be included on the final album.

6. Steven Tyler turns 51 on Friday, March 26th.

7. Aerosmith cleans house by firing their manager [Wendy Laister], their agent, and their lawyer. Their public relations person [Luke Burland] also quits. The boyz sign with the L.A. based “HK Management” and hire John Branca as their lawyer.

8. Aerosmith’s involvement in the Disney roller coaster “The Rock ‘N Roller Coaster” is confirmed.

APRIL

1. On Friday, April 9th, Tom Hamilton performs in “Banned In Boston '99,” a benefit for Urban Improv, a comedy/theater troupe that works with inner city kids.

2. Aerosmith re-launch their “A Little South Of Sanity” tour at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

3. Aerosmith are confirmed to perform at Woodstock '99.

4. Steven Tyler and his wife Teresa made an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show” onThursday, April 15th talking about who they had donated money to build an Oprah "Angel House" for a needy family in Boston. While there, Steven Tyler donated the rights to the Aerosmith song "Fallen Angels" to Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network.

5. The movie "Clubland" [in which Steven Tyler plays a small role] is released in theaters in VERY Limited release on Friday, April 16th.

6. Joey Kramer dyed his hair bleached blonde.

7. Aerosmith won "Best Video" for "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" and Steven Tyler won the award "Best Male Vocalist” at the Boston Music Awards. Aerosmith also lost ”Act Of The Year” and “Best Rock Band.”

8. Aerosmith play 10 full shows.

MAY

1. Aerosmith plays the “Fiddler's Green Amphitheater” in Englewood, Colorado in very bad weather and Joey Kramer gets sick. Joe Perry and Steven Tyler get sick as well soon there after...and as a result four concerts are canceled.

2. The "Armageddon" soundtrack is certified Quadruple Platinum on Wednesday, May 5th.

3. Former Aerosmith producer Bruce Fairbairn dies at the age of 49 on Monday, May 17th.

4. Aerosmith cancel their June 14th concert at the Sportshalle in Prague, Czech Republic because the Venue in Prague would not be ready in time for the concert.

5. Aerosmith play 8 full shows.

JUNE

1. It is announced that Steven Tyler and Joe Perry might appear on Run DMC’s new album.

2. Aerosmith win “Best Song From A Movie” for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” at the “The 1999 MTV Movie Awards.”

3. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry perform “Walk This Way” with Run DMC at a Boston radio station concert on Saturday, June 5th.

4. Aerosmith announce that they will play in Osaka, Japan on New Years Eve.

5. It is announced that the Aerosmith tribute album “Not The Same Old Song And Dance” will be released on Tuesday, September 7th on Cleopatra/Dead Line Records.

6. Aerosmith cancel yet another concert. The Saturday, June 12th concert at the “Trabrennbahn” in Hamburg, Germany on account of a problem with the stage roof that couldn't be fixed on time.

7. Aerosmith re-records “Sweet Emotion” that which Steven Tyler says it will appear on a soundtrack for the winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City 2002. But, Aerosmith also band sold the song to General Motors for a TV commercial for $8 million dollars and five brand new 2000 Corvette’s. This apparently puts the boyz in very hot water with Sony Records because they apparently didn’t cut Sony in on the money.

8. Aerosmith announce that they will NOT play at Woodstock 99 due to "mutual production problems and scheduling conflicts."

9. Joey Kramer turns 49 on Monday, June 21st.

10. It is announced that Aerosmith will be inducted into the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2000.

11. The Black Crowes performed with Jimmy Page at the 400-capacity Cafe du Paris in London on Monday, June 28th. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry join them for three songs; “Train Kept A Rollin' “, “Heartbreaker”, and “You Shook Me.”

12. Aerosmith play 9 full shows.

JULY

1. During their concert on Sunday, July 4th in “Messehalle” in Erfurt, Germany Joe Perry’s son Adrian jumps up on stage for a version of “Stop Messin’ Around.”

2. The band Babylon A.D. release their cover of “Rats In The Cellar” on their album "Live In Your Face" on Tuesday, July 13th.

3. Aerosmith play the final show of their 8 month “A Little South Of Sanity” tour at the “National Stadium” in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, July 17th.

4. The band Metal Church release their cover of “Toys In The Attic” on their album "Masterpeace" on Tuesday, July 27th.

5. Aerosmith officially open their “Rock ‘N Roller Coaster” Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, July 29th.

6. Aerosmith play 8 full shows.

AUGUST

1. Aerosmith win “Best Love Song” for “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” at the “1999 Teen Choice Awards” on Thursday, August 12th.

2. Steven Tyler applies for and receives a motorcycle permit in Massachusetts.

3. Joey Kramer appears on the VH-1 show “Before They Were Rock Stars” on Friday, August 13th.

4. It is announced that Joe Perry will appear on Ringo Starr’s Christmas album “I Wanna Be Santa Claus.”

5. Raven Records sends out a press release on Sunday, August 22nd saying that they will release "The Music STILL Does The Talking: The Best Of The Joe Perry Project” on Tuesday, September 14th.

6. Jason Scheff releases a cover of the Aerosmith song “Fever” [although this is a cover of the Garth Brooks version of “Fever”] on the album "A Tribute To Garth Brooks: New Friends In Low Places" on Tuesday, August 24th.

SEPTEMBER

1. Aerosmith announce the six night, four city "Roar Of The Dragon" mini-tour of Japan to begin on Wednesday, December 29th, 1999 and end on Friday, January 7th, 2000.

2. The Aerosmith tribute album “Not The Same Old Song And Dance” is released on Tuesday, September 7th.

3. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry perform “Walk This Way” on stage at the “1999 MTV Video Music Awards” on Thursday, September 9th with Run DMC and Kid Rock.

4. Joe Perry turns 49 on Friday, September 10th.

5. Raven Records release "The Music STILL Does The Talking: The Best Of The Joe Perry Project” on Tuesday, September 14th.

6. Steven Tyler sang the Star Spangled Banner for the first time on Sunday, September 19th before New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts football game at Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

7. Aerosmith is nominated for the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, September 20th.

8. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry join John Goodman and Dan Aykroyd on stage on Sunday, September 26th in “The Rainbow Room” in New Your City, New York.

OCTOBER

1. Joe Perry joins Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes on stage to play two songs [“You Shook Me” and “Oh Well”] at the “Worcester Centrum Centre” in Worcester, Massachusetts.

2. The Ringo Starr Christmas album “I Wanna Be Santa Claus” [which features Joe Perry on "Pax Um Biscum (Peace Be With You)" and “Christmas Time Is Here Again”] is released on Tuesday, October 19th.

3. It is announced that Steven Tyler might appear on a Joni Mitchell tribute album to be released in the year 2000.

4. The web site “MakeItOrBreakIt.com” releases the Aerosmith video “Clips.”

5. Some Aerosmith fans get a big scare when The New York Post prints an article in which it quotes Steven Tyler’s daughter Mia as saying "I think it'll be the last one” referring to Aerosmith’s next album. Fans quickly come to their senses realizing Steven will never retire. ; )

NOVEMBER

1. Nascar Winston Cup Series driver and Aerosmith friend/fan Kenny Wallace competes at “The Dura Lube 500" race on Sunday, November 7th at the Phoenix International Raceway with a big Aerosmith logo on his hood...a tribute to his favorite band. Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton attend the race.

2. It is announced that Aerosmith will be honored Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday, December 8th, 1999.

3. Aerosmith fires longtime business manger (and Brad Whitford’s brother-in-law) Burt Goldstein and sign with the accounting powerhouse Gelfand Rennert & Feldman.

4. It is reported that Aerosmith might record a song with UK pop band “Steps” in 2000.

DECEMBER

1. The inductees for the Rock and Roll of Fame are announces and Aerosmith are not one of them.

2. Aerosmith receive a "Life Time Achievement Award" at the “1999 Billboard Music Awards” on Wednesday, December 8th. Everyone shows up to accept, except for Brad, who had a death in his family and could not attend.

3. It is announced that Steven Tyler might appear on the debut album from “The Twisted Brown Trucker Band” (Kid Rock’s band) next year.

4. Steven Tyler officially annouces that Aerosmith are indeed hard at work on thier 13th studio album.

5. Aerosmith’s “Roar Of The Dragon” tour begins on Wednesday, December 29th at the Osaka Dome in Osaka, Japan.

6. Tom Hamilton turned 48 on Friday, December 31st.

7. Aerosmith plays the Osaka Dome on New Year’s Eve ending another great year in the history of Aerosmith.

8. Aerosmith play 2 full shows.
