My guess is that they will be included in the highlights segment of 2002 concert tours...even found a comment that seems to indicate the same....

"Clark will also introduce highlight performances from some of this past year's most successful tours, including Aerosmith"....

So perhaps some concert clips and maybe if we're lucky another word or two maybe even a mention of Tom's birthday...but then again..who knows.

The Just Push Play Video is Original. It was recorded on Osaka concert in Japan and Mixed with things that have been showed at big screen behind the boys. My friend, Radek from Warsaw told me, that it was showed a few times on MTV as "Just Push Play" video.

I saw the screenshots and that looks identical to what the band would play on the big video screen behind them at the concert during that song. I remember the robot getting...well a little friendly with herself. And then during the chorus it would come up on the screen "Fuckin A" in that same font/style.

Hollywood takes a new fancy to Plain

Could be - if reports of a new Hollywood movie to be filmed in Lancaster County this spring are on the money.

According to a report by columnist Stu Bykofsky in the Dec. 18 Philadelphia Daily News, the movie, tentatively titled "Sinking Spring" - and based on the Amish//Pagans motorcycle gang, cocaine trafficking scandal of the mid-1990s - is scheduled to begin shooting in Philadelphia and Lancaster in March.

According to Bykofsky and other published reports, the film will star James Caan as an FBI agent, Aerosmith's Tyler as an Amishman and Carey as a drug addict.

We're not making this up, by the way.

Reports say the film also will feature a number of actors who star in HBO's "The Sopranos" series, including Vincent Pastore as a corrupt sheriff and Tony Sirico and Federico Castelluccio, who will play bikers who supply the "Amish drug smuggling ring."

Also appearing as a biker will be Dean Winters, who stars in the HBO series "Oz," and Clare Danes "is mulling the part of the Amish drug kingpin's wife who snitched on the gang," states PageSix.com.

The film, based on a screenplay by novelist Jack Engelhard, appears to be (very) loosely based on the case of two unrelated Amishmen, Abner King Stoltzfus of Ronks and Abner Stolztfus of Bart, who got caught up in an alliance with Pagan motorcycle gang members. The Stoltzfuses, who cooperated with investigators in the case, had been charged with buying up to $100,000 worth of cocaine from Pagans members they had met while working as roofers and then distributing it to other Amish youth at weekend social gatherings. Both were sentenced to a year in federal prison.

A number of Pagans arrested in the case received substantially longer jail terms.

John Pyfer, the local attorney who represented the Amishmen in the case and participated in a series of subsequent meetings designed to warn the Plain community about the dangers of drugs, was unavailable for comment; Joseph Dominguez, an attorney for Exelon Energy who was a U.S. attorney in the mid-1990s and helped arrange the meetings, did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Visitors Bureau administrative assistant Cheryl Deaven said the county's official tourism promotion agency had heard rumors of the film, but was unable to confirm any details about it or its production.

"We have no confirmation or any details about this movie," said Megan Reedy, acting director of communications for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, which oversees the Pennsylvania Film Office. A staffer at the Philadelphia Film Office, location coordinator Joan Gistele, said that the office had not been contacted about the film. "But they might not have gotten around to us yet," she said.

The film is reportedly being adapted from a screenplay by Englehard, a former Philadelphia Inquirer writer and author of several well-known books, including "Indecent Proposal." According to Bykofsky's Dec. 18 column, James "Jimmy" Darren - former teen-idol singer, actor and director - has been signed to direct the film, written by Lou Silver and veteran character actor Frank Vincent.

Darren, a native of South Philadelphia, performed at Hershey Amphitheatre at Hersheypark on Aug. 4.

Vincent, who often portrays mobsters, will appear in the movie as Caan's FBI partner.

The film reportedly will be produced by either Anthony Esposito, who has worked with diva Carey before, on the independent movie "Wisegirls" and "Sweet Science," in which Carey plays a boxing manager.

According to the New York Post, Danny Provenzano was originally hired by Esposito to direct the film. But in November Provenzano - a nephew of reputed Genovese crime family associate Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano - pleaded guilty to racketeering charges, admitting to four incidents of assault and threats to extort money, including an incident where he had an underling break another man's thumbs. He could face a 15-year prison term and was replaced by Darren.

Did we mention we're not making any of this up?

The local tourism industry might welcome the attention generated by another major Hollywood film; in the mid-1980s, the already flourishing industry exploded after "Witness," starring Harrison Ford as an FBI agent who hides out on a Lancaster County farm to protect an Amish boy, became a big hit.

Ford's co-star in the movie, Kelly McGillis, now lives in Berks County, near Reading.

Subsequent Hollywood productions set in Lancaster County - including "Kingpin," starring Randy Quaid as an Amish bowler, and "For Richer or Poorer," starring Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley as rich New Yorkers who try to evade the IRS by taking refuge on an Amish farm - haven't been hits and haven't had the same impact on the tourism industry.

Still, at least one of the reputed stars of "Sinking Springs" seems excited about the chance to exchange his usual gaudy wardrobe for Plain threads.

"I'm there; I'm there," Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler told Salon.com, which in a September story reported he would be featured in "a buggy-riding role."

"I love the Amish," said Tyler. "They've got it all together."

Cobain made alot of lists of his favourite albums, and Aerosmith "Rocks" was in them every time. He also mentions how he was just as influenced by punk as he was by Led Zep, Aerosmith and The Beatles. Also, he has a go at kids of the '80's, who get into cheesy 80's bands who rip of the bands of the '70's, and criticises them because they won't have heard the old Aerosmith albums!

Seems the man was a fairly huge Aerosmith fan. There are pics floating about the net of him with Joe Perry, and I've heard he used to jam on Sweet Emotion when they played live!

AEROSMITH frontman Steven Tyler remembered the life of RUN-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay in "The Best of 2002" edition of Entertainment Weekly magazine. Tyler wrote, "AEROSMITH toured with RUN-DMC this past summer, and Jay and I became really close. Our encore was always 'Walk This Way', and we'd bring out RUN-DMC, and the place would always just explode. Jay would be off on the side to the left of Joe Perry, and not five feet from him would be [Jay's] son and his family. I'd sing the first verse, and Jay would be there with his turntables, scratching, and I'd go over and stick the mic in his face to give him a chance to sing where he ordinarily wouldn't. The first couple of times I did that, he'd get a little embarrassed, but it became something that we did every night.

"Jay was the shit, man. I used to hang out with him and his 7-year- old son, who I shared my Jolly Ranchers with - and I don't do that with anybody. Jay was the guy who first grabbed our original version of 'Walk This Way' and started scratching over it, you know. He and the other guys would always come to my dressing room before the show, and we'd sit and talk.

"He was really a beautiful, open guy. There was something meaningless about his murder, and I still don't know all the details. I just don't want to pursue it. The sadness of his death pales compared with the joy and relevance and inspiration that he gave to the world. He was the furthest person from being a gangsta that I knew, and I'm really going to miss him." (Jam Master Jay was fatally shot in a recording studio in Queens.)

Vegas:

After the Denver gig the Billboard Awards sent a plane to bring Steven, Joe and some of their crew to Las Vegas for the Billboard Awards Show. We got in around 1:30 AM and went to the Hotel. Steven and Joe went down to one of the casino restaurants for a way past midnight snack and then called it a night. I thought I would stay down there for a little while and make a killing at the Blackjack table and go to bed. After about an hour I found that I suddenly felt a lot lighter in the old wallet, which made it a little easier getting up from the stool. I didn't make the killing I thought I'd make but had fun nonetheless.

The guys went over to rehearse and I have to say I didn't think they could pull it off for the show. It looked like chaos up there. People stepping on each other's lines and bumping into one another. Joe and Steven had their parts down from the git go and it took a lot of work for the others to follow suit. It ended up looking and sounding great. Steven and Joe sat in their seats for the show. It was funny seeing the parade of people coming by kind and paying their respects like they were the Don Corleone of rock. Steven split early to rehearse his presentation for Cher and Joe stayed and watched the rest of the show. I think he liked Puddle Of Mudd, the bass player is from Boston and they rocked. Steven nailed his introduction for Cher. They seem to have a lot of respect for each and are both the consummate professionals. After the show, Steven and Joe hung out with Cher and her son, Elijah, at her hotel until the mean assistant tour manager told them they had to split for the airport to go to the sunshine shine state of Minnesota. We pulled into Minneapolis at around 1:00 AM. It was the end of a 24 hour marathon that left the whole crew a little drained.

Minneapolis has always been a good stop for the guys. A couple of years ago the whole band went to see Cheap Trick at 1st Ave. That club is right across the street from the Target Center. As we passed the club you can see a list of every national band that headlined there. Joe said he thought he played there but wasn't sure. I'm sure someone out there would know. I have a bootleg for the Project from the early 80's but I think it's from The Loose Caboose. (I wonder if they played "Train" that night?)

As you might know Minneapolis is the home of the Mall of America. Some of the guys spent the afternoon doing a little Christmas shopping there before leaving for Detroit.

Detroit has got to be one of the greatest Rock and Roll cities in the world. I think this was our 4th visit to Detroit this cycle. The crowd is always wild. The fans come from all over to see this show. It was a great night. Some of the Detroit Red Wings came to the show. The band's dressing rooms were right next to their locker room so it had that hockey equipment funk smell to it that a little incense took care of. Wings, Chris Chelios, Serge Federov and Jason Wooley felt right at home. After the show they hung out with Joe on his bus where the main topic of conversation was knee operations. Chris invited Joe to the game the next night and he gladly accepted.

The game was cool and had a lot of scoring. One thing I noticed was that the referees were constantly picking up little silver wings from the ice the whole night. It seems the band's confetti cannons reached high up to the ceiling of old building and stayed up there conveniently until game time. Kenny Olson from Kid Rock's band came by for a short visit along with Aerosmith Keyboard player and star of the What's Up? Show, Russ Irwin.

Steven Tyler is on the front side of certain bottles of the beer brand QUILMES (made in Argentina). The bottles has the text "Rock" on them, along with a painting of Steven. The bottles are also labeled as "limited edition."

What is pretty cool, is that Steven Tyler is representing Rock And Roll on Argentina No.1 beer!! Andrés went to Quilmes website, but could not find a photo.

Blues music steps up to center stage in 2003

Congress has officially declared 2003 "The Year of the Blues."

Well, naturally. War is imminent, the economy is lurching along in a rut and "The Sopranos" has only one season left.

Actually, the legislators designated the "Year of the Blues" in a literal sense, as a tribute to the blues, "the most influential form of American roots music." But the broader implication is too obvious to ignore.

The custodians of the blues have been fretting over the music's waning relevance for decades now, but there is always something to lament. And 2003 is shaping up to be plenty blue.

If hip-hop is "the black CNN," as Chuck D. famously suggested, blues music was a running news bulletin from the earliest days of radio. The blues, as the Congress noted, have documented the Great Depression, "race relations, pop culture and the migration of the United States from a rural, agricultural society to an urban, industrialized nation."

And the reporting continues. The funky organist Jimmy Smith recently recorded "Dot Com Blues." We know the feeling, especially here in the Bay Area.

We're not quite standing in the soup lines yet, but the financial attitude of the country hasn't been so anxious in years. Race relations may be improving, but for every few steps forward there are an awful "Lott" in the wrong direction.

As for the state of pop culture, well, two words: "American Idol."

If we have plenty to anguish over, the redemptive power of anguishing has been the emotional premise behind the blues for a century. Emotionally speaking, whatever its market share, the music of such artistic giants as Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker has as much meaning today as it ever has. A formal recognition of this essential American cultural form is long overdue.

Several ambitious projects celebrating the heritage of the blues are scheduled in 2003, including showcase concerts, record and DVD releases, and a touring exhibit, "Sweet Home Chicago," which will debut at Seattle's Experience Music Project.

Topping the list is "The Blues," a long-awaited, seven-part PBS series scheduled to air in the fall, a la "Ken Burns Jazz." Martin Scorsese is the executive producer, with episodes directed by such eminent filmmakers as Wim Wenders, Mike Figgis and Clint Eastwood.

Whatever spin they put on the music's history, it's all there in the words. The great bluesmen served witness to the trials of their own time, and they didn't expect much in the way of improvement.

Years before the Rolling Stones expressed the modern ennui, Muddy Waters sang "I Can't Be Satisfied." And he didn't even live long enough to see the ever-expanding wasteland of cable television.

Elmore James wrote "The Sky Is Crying" for a lost love, but they'll be singing it in Baghdad soon.

T-Bone Walker was lovesick too, declaring "I'm About to Lose My Mind." At least he didn't have to contend with telemarketers, spam e-mail or cell phones that ring to the tune of "Like a Virgin."

And Sonny Boy Williamson might have been thinking about any number of people -- Di's butler, Linda Tripp, Kato Kaelin -- when he warned, "Don't start me to talkin'/ I'll tell everything I know."

"How many more years?" the late Howlin' Wolf wanted to know. If he was looking for some acknowledgment for the blues, this is the one. If he was searching for reasons to be optimistic, he undoubtedly knew better.

Whenever Liv comes on, Dave always has pictures of Steven to show her. One of the pictures he showed was from a concert, where Steven is kind of crouching and you can see Tom Hamilton staring off into space. Dave says, "Here's daddy at work!" Liv looks at the picture and asks "what's Tom doing?" Dave replies, "He doesn't know" and Liv went on laughing about the look on Tom's face.

The NYPD inspector under investigation for allegedly helping Aerosmith rockers Steve Tyler and Joe Perry get gun licenses was placed on modified duty yesterday, officials said.

Inspector Bernard Petrofsky, former head of the NYPD License Division, was assigned to desk duty - and his gun and badge were taken away - after the department filed 10 charges against him in connection with the case, which was first reported last month by The Post.

Petrofsky, a respected veteran who's now assigned to the Intelligence Division, is accused of awarding the rock stars licenses when they may not have deserved them, and inappropriately accepting backstage passes to an Aerosmith concert last winter.

He is also suspected of making a "false statement" in connection with the internal probe.

Petrofsky has denied the allegations.

While most insiders believe the offenses, at most, were lapses in judgment, he may face harsh penalties if convicted, because of his rank and the fact that the License Division has been beset by past misconduct.

I've actually known about those two different versions of Misery with Pink and Steven for quite a while now. You see, I originally downloaded the version with less Steven from Aerocanal. A few months ago, I actually bought Pink's Missundaztood album just for kicks and the version of Misery on the actual album I have is the one with more vocals by Steven. So of course I was confused, and curious... and decided to ask around. From what I've heard, some people have a Missundaztood album that has the less Steven version of Misery, and some people have the album with more. So I think there's just two different versions of the album out there. That the first couple million had the less Steven version, and the recent ones they've been putting out have more Steven on the Misery track. Why, I have no idea. Personally, I love hearing as much Steven as possible, so I applaud the decision to release the version where he sings more on the song. Whoever decided it... I imagine a big fan of Pink would probably know what's up here, but I don't know.

Aerosmith is a band with so many monster hits, coming up with a corny word play based on one of their song titles with which to open a review of their Sunday night performance at the Van Andel Arena was almost too easy.

After over 30 years together, would the Bad Boys from Boston be a little "Jaded"? Or has their "Train Kept A-Rollin'" all these years?

Take your pick, but besides making it entirely too easy for this reviewer to sound awfully cheesy, Aerosmith's vast catalog of hits also contains the promise of one heckuva fun show. And as they proved Sunday, the band certainly knows "What It Takes" (I swear, that's the last of them) to deliver on that promise.

Aerosmith treated the sold-out Van Andel Arena crowd to a 20-song, two-hour cavalcade of chart toppers. From the bluesy rockers of the band's early days in the 1970s, to polished radio ballads from recent years, front man Steven Tyler and company turned in a powerful show that ticked off just about every box on the checklist of what a great rock concert needs to contain.

Lots of big amps. Check. A great light show. Check. Sing-along choruses. Check. With the exception of pyrotechnics, you name it, and Aerosmith brought it Sunday night -- and did so with more energy (the ever-stony Brad Whitford on guitar as the only exception) than most bands half their age.

To open the show, Tyler, bassist Tom Hamilton, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarists Joe Perry and Whitford made their way through the audience to a stage set up in the center of the arena floor.

Packed onto that tight performance space, Aerosmith served up hot versions of "Toys in the Attic" and "Love in an Elevator," the latter drawn out and spiffed up so much, it would have made a satisfying encore. After the band put that much into a song so early in the show, it was clear that Sunday's concert would be something special.

Some of the most special moments included "Sweet Emotion," which Perry's guitar dissected with the precision and force of a brain surgeon armed with a chain saw, "Dream On," which Tyler sang perfectly (hitting all the high notes) from the mini stage in the center of the arena floor, and "Pink," which was the showpiece of the set.

It's even hard not to like the band's novelty songs like "Big Ten Inch Record" and "Falling In Love (Is Hard on the Knees)," which can get annoying in their tiresome adolescence, when Tyler delivers them with such personality.

Speaking of personality, Perry, Whitford and Hamilton showcased a parade of beautiful guitars throughout the night, including a Gibson hollow body with what appeared to be a supermodel's picture airbrushed onto it Perry lugged out for "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

I thought about that concept for a moment, looking around at the sea of female fans lusting over these guys and concluded that whether or not the woman on the guitar was a supermodel, she was probably Perry's girlfriend. There's no such thing as an unattainable woman when you're Joe Perry.

Women love them. Men want to be like them. Aerosmith really is what classic rock 'n' roll is all about. If there was any question prior to Sunday night, by the time the band wrapped up "Walk the Way," the third song of the band's three-song encore, the Van Andel Arena was full of thousands of exhausted, confetti-covered witnesses whose testimony could clear up any doubt.

Andrew W.K. opens

The 12 songs on Andrew W.K.'s grab-you-by-the-throat-and-shake-you debut album "I Get Wet" sound like they were custom designed for the big arena stage. Fist-pumpin' beats back shout-along choruses on every cut.

Opening for Aerosmith Sunday night put the 23-year-old Los Angeles native (who, incidentally, was raised in Ypsilanti, Mich.) on that big arena stage in front of a big arena audience that included, he was proud to mention, his parents. It was the perfect vehicle for W.K.'s party rock.

Picking standouts from his energetic set is hard, since most of his songs run together as variations on the party hard theme, but it might take a crowbar to dislodge "She Is Beautiful" and "I Love New York City" from my mind after hearing W.K. perform those catchy tunes.

If the rock musician thing doesn't work out, perhaps W.K. could look into becoming a fitness instructor. Two songs into his set, W.K.'s back was soaking with sweat by the second song of his set. Andrew W.K. goes nuts on stage and while his raw performance lacked the polish of veteran rockers Aerosmith, I hope he never loses that quality.

Steven Tyler has big lips. Andrew W.K. is a nut. Everybody's got a gift to share with the world.

I sent John Kalodner an email when we heard that Jack Douglas was the producer for the "blues" album...just to see if he could confirm it was true, well here is his reply...

Hi Alesia and thank you for your e-mail, I know Jack Douglas is being considered by the band for their blues album to be recorded in the Winter of 2003. Even though he's a great producer and produced so many of their classic songs, I don't think he's the best choice to do the record. I would suggest Rick Rubin, who has the same passion as Jack Douglas, but may have a fresher approach to their interpretation of the blues. But, it's up to the band, and certainly Jack Douglas is a lovely and talented man.

Currently in the last week of a world tour that began in the spring of 2001, Aerosmith is eyeballing a spring start to the recording of its next album. The quintet has revealed that it's planning a return to its roots, taking on blues and blues-based rock songs that are among its influences.

However, guitarist Brad Whitford says the final product will not necessarily

be a covers album:
"People are actually calling it a blues album--how it'll really turn out, 'course, is always a surprise for everybody, us included. We're actually gonna sit down and, and be playing a lot of our favorite blues songs to kind of start off with, and maybe doing some covers, and also seeing what develops as we do that. And normally in that process, we start to create some of our own ideas."

Jack Douglas, who produced Aerosmith albums including Get Your Wings, Toys In The Attic, and Rocks, will be working with the band on the new album. Douglas is also in the midst of making a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of Toys In The Attic.

Aerosmith next performs Tuesday (December 17) in State College, Pennsylvania.

Details: Thirty years is a lifetime in the notoriously short careers of most groups. As Aerosmith hits this enviable anniversary, the band seems to be enjoying a look back.

A new best-of CD, "O Yeah! The Ultimate Aerosmith Hits," focuses on the group's music, providing a career-spanning overview of the most popular tunes from the band's tumultuous history.

Meanwhile a new VH1 "Behind The Music" special goes beyond Aerosmith's music to examine the off-stage trials, tribulations and triumphs of the group.

Though few bands have had as much dirty laundry aired in the media, drummer Joey Kramer said he wasn't overlooking the significance of the "Behind The Music" show when the group filmed it.

"It was a big deal, and there's always stuff you never let out to the public," he said. "It's not different things that were never covered before. It just went into greater depth about a lot of things."

After becoming one of the biggest hard rock groups going behind such mid-1970s albums as "Toys In the Attic" and "Rocks," internal tensions and drug and alcohol problems fractured the band.

By 1979, guitarist Joe Perry (who was singer Steven Tyler's songwriting partner) left to start his own group, the Joe Perry Project. In 1981 guitarist Brad Whitford exited as well.

By all appearances, Aerosmith had wasted a bright future. But in the mid-1990s, the original lineup reunited. More importantly Tyler and Perry entered rehab, and the band as a whole cleaned up their act and prepared to record the 1987 CD, "Permanent Vacation."

"In the '70s, when we first got together, radio did not want to hear guitar music, anything blues-based, loud, crunchy music," Hamilton said. "But then we came through the punk and the new wave era, and rock music, guitar music, started to become a lot more mainstream. ...

"Now the thing that it had to be, though, was they had to be lush sounding," Hamilton added. "They couldn't be too aggressive and threatening. And we definitely, we've always had a softer, melodic side. If you listen to 'Rocks' and 'Toys In the Attic,' there are piano ballads. That aspect of it just kind of stood out and became something that all of a sudden mainstream radio was interested in playing."

So it's no coincidence that "Permanent Vacation," was defined by radio hits like "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)," "Rag Doll" and "Angel" that turned the CD into a multi-platinum smash.

The hit singles and platinum-selling CDs have kept coming ever since, as the releases that have followed -- "Pump," "Get a Grip," "Nine Lives" and "Just Push Play" -- have cemented Aerosmith's position into one of rock's most enduring acts.

Lord of the Rings actress Liv Tyler has turned her back on the celebrity lifestyle and become a member of a working men's club.

Liv turned up at the club in Yorkshire wearing a pair of muddy wellies.

And to celebrate her new membership, the 25-year-old even gets the beers in for the locals.

Liv, who plays elf princess Arwen in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, felt so at home at the New Headingly Social Club in Leeds that she signed up.

'Always buys a round'

And locals got an even bigger surprise when she turned up with her pal Kate Moss.

One regular told the Daily Star newspaper: "Liv's a lovely, down-to-earth girl - and she always buys a round.

"It's a quiet place. We don't have any music but we have snooker tables, darts, doms and cards.

"The only problem is it's a little harder to concentrate on your doms when Liv walks in."

New pad

Liv was introduced to the club by her Leeds-born fiance, Royston Langdon, singer with band Spacehog.

Royston's father, Chester, has long been a member of the club.

The daughter of Aerosmith's Steve Tyler and model Bebe Buell has just bought a £2.5m pad in New York.

Membership at the club is £3 a year.

Fort Wayne Indiana:
Fresh off the Thanksgiving break we headed to FW the afternoon of the show. On the way from the plane to the gig Tom and Joe were reminiscing about how many times they played at this particular venue. It's weird because for them walking into an old venue like the Memorial Coliseum must be like walking through he halls of your old high school for you and me. It turned out to be a great show and a great crowd and the debut of Andrew WK.

Andrew WK hit the stage and the place was like, What the F*&K! Who is this guy? But, by the end of the set he got the crowd on his side. He has been doing that in every city. I have a feeling he is going to go over well in Detroit. I hear he's a nice guy and signs autographs and talks to fans at a T-shirt booth after his show. You can also find him by the side of the stage with the rest of his band checking out Aerosmith every night.

Memphis: Memphis is one of my favorite cities. We always have a ball in Memphis and this trip was no different. I mentioned a while back that at the Sacramento show Elvis's old tour manager and friend Joe Esposito came to the show with his family and chatted with the guys for a little bit before the show. Well, Joe Perry invited Joe Esposito to come out to Memphis and hang out for a few days. Well, he did and Joe P. and I went to Graceland the day after the show for a private tour. As you guys might have heard the story that Joe was at Graceland the day Big E died and he tried to revive the King but to no avail. It was pretty eerie walking through the house with a guy that lived there for a period of time. It was the 10th visit to Graceland between us it this was by far the most informative tour we have taken of the old shack.

Earlier in the day we hit Cozy Corner Ribs for a "lite" lunch before the tour. If you’re in the area check them out. Try the cornish game hen.

This is another weird thing that happened in Memphis. I was walking out of the hotel with Steven and Kripa (Steven's assistant) that same day of the Graceland tour. It was around midnight and we were just out for a stroll. We turned the corner on Beale street and you could hear this blues music coming from BB King's Blues Club. As we get closer you can see and hear the band playing in the window. I said wow these guys sound great and Steven said yeah and the guy in the middle looks a little like Brad Whitford. Well, as you guessed it! It was Brad and he had been going down to that same club and jamming with The BB King All Stars for 3 nights in a row. We stood by the window and caught the last song before closing. Brad is slippery and you never know where he will end up in any given town.

Wichita is another place where the band hit in the early years of touring. The place was packed and the people were nuts and had a ball. After the gig we went straight to Denver.

Denver is a really cool city. On Saturday they had "the Festival of lights." It was a parade that went right by our hotel. It kept the band pretty much confined to the hotel until things quieted down. After that Joey, Steven and their security guard Donnie went to the movies. (Sorry, slow news day guys).

I just heard that the movie Brad is in called, "This Thing of Ours" is slated to be released nationwide in the early part of the year. Brad has a small but powerful part of a wise guy who ends up on the wrong side of a bottle. I'm told it's a kind of new age mafia movie that stars James Caan, Vincent "Big Pussy" Pastore, Good Fella Frank "Go get your F'N Shinebox" Vincent and Pat Cooper. Joe Perry contributes a couple of instrumentals to the soundtrack as does Vindaloo Music's main man Mike Verge who penned the tune "Connected" for the flick.

I'm assuming p/k/a would be "Professionally Known As" so I guess all his kids would be Tallarico's unless they decide to take "Tyler" as their professional names, which (as we all know) Liv & Mia have.

There is no way veteran rockers Aerosmith could top their concert-of-the-year performance at Target Center last year, right? Wrong.

On Tuesday night, a packed Target Center crowd of hip youngsters and burnt-out fogies alike once again witnessed why the Boston bad boys are considered one of the last of the pure rock and roll groups, left over from a time when seeing a concert meant seeing a rock spectacle and not a marketing gimmick.

They witnessed that arena rock is actually not dead, but alive and kicking. They witnessed why a group of rock Hall of Famers in their 50s has been able to not only survive, but thrive for 35 years. They witnessed the energy, the screams, the high-octane music, the fireworks, the sexiness and the passion that have come to define Aerosmith - and they loved every minute.

It's only too bad it couldn't last longer than two hours. The band members made their entrance through the crowd, a move unheard of in this day of grabbing hands and worse. They opened up with one of their first hits, "Toys in the Attic," a throwback to their garage-band days,

Aerosmith has always had a reputation for its tight performance (the benefit of working together for all these years), and each band member played his role perfectly, creating an exciting chemistry that worked through both the hard rockers like "Love in an Elevator," "Livin' on the Edge" and last year's hit "Jaded," and the slower ballads like "Cryin' " and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

But the main focus is, and always has been, ace guitarist Joe Perry and the excitable Steven Tyler, a tandem that sometimes puts legends like Jagger/Richards to shame. While these two may be polar opposites in the real world, once the lights come up their brotherhood of rock can ignite a crowd. Tuesday's show proved no different, with the two playing off each other regularly.

Perry even briefly took center stage, ripping through a blues segment that showed why he's one of today's best axmen. But Tyler's interaction with the band and the crowd, including slapping hands, pulling girls on stage to dance, and handing out kisses galore, not to mention his pelvic thrusts and raw dancing, showed why he's the frontman.

Opener and hyped-up metal head Andrew W.K. proved his status as one-hit wunderkind with a barely audible set that did little to move the crowd until he played his party anthem, "Party Hard." Luckily, Aerosmith provided enough juice of its own right from the get-go.

LIV Tyler left fans gasping as she arrived at the London premiere of the new The Lord of the Rings movie.

But admirers had missed out on the real showstopper.

That came at the Paris premiere the night before when she wore a stunning low- cut gown.

However, Liv, who plays elf Arwen in the latest instalment The Two Towers, was blown away by the reception she got at the Odeon Leicester Square.

The star said: "That's the most people I've ever heard screaming my name in my life - I can't take it all in."

Tyler is to marry her British rock star boyfriend next year. Royston Langdon, singer with Spacehog, said: "I guess it's going to be 2003, maybe in the late summer."

However, Live remained coy as she said: "It's none of your business."

The actress, daughter of Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler, headed a glittering guest list of stars at the launch of the fantasy epic.

Cate Blanchett, another elf princess called Galadriel, dazzled in a white Versace knee- length dress and matching jacket as she made her late entrance for the crowd of 4000.

The Aussie star had not seen the movie beforehand. She makes only the briefest of appearances: "I think it's about 60 seconds actually.

"I've seen absolutely nothing so I'm really excited. It's a surreal dream. It's a historic film and it's never going to happen like this again."

Models Nell McAndrew, Sophie Anderton, and Emma Noble joined Scots actor Billy Boyd - who plays the hobbit Pippin - at the premiere.

(12/11/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Aerosmith has just a few dates left on its current tour, which kicked off in the summer of 2001. The Boston group will be recording a new album in 2003--possibly a collection of blues covers--but it also plans to be out on the road again next summer.

Guitarist Brad Whitford tells LAUNCH that it won't just be another round of touring, as the band has some pretty big plans. "We're looking at going out again next summer, but we kinda want to do something a little different, and maybe put on our own event. We're looking at doing something more like an OzzFest-type thing, and making much more of an event out of it, rather than just what we've been doing the past couple of years. That's something we're trying to put together, and we'll see what happens with that."

Whitford says it's too early to identify any bands that might be on an Aerosmith festival bill.

The group next plays Friday (December 13) at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Friday, December 06, 2002 - The original lineup that cut the very first Aerosmith album back in 1973 is still intact. Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass) and Joey Kramer (drums) have not only torn up the rule book on the limits of human toxicology, they've survived and thrived.

The bad boys from Boston - OK, they're middle-aged rockers now - are on a four-month tour, including a date at Pepsi Center on Sunday, in support of "O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits." It's a two-CD set stuffed with hits from the band's years on both Geffen and Columbia Records, from early classics ("Mama Kin," "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion") to more recent favorites ("Janie's Got a Gun" "Livin' on the Edge," "Just Push Play") - the hard-rock equivalent of "Elvis 30 #1 Hits."

"It was tough getting all the people around the table to agree - some of the stuff has been bought and sold three times since it was recorded," Perry said recently. "But they did it. Now everybody benefits."

On his own, Perry is tasting success with a successful taste - he's hawking Joe Perry's Rock Your World Boneyard Brew Hot Sauce.

"I've always said, 'If you're going to play, play it loud, and if you're going to cook, cook with fire,"' he said with a laugh.

"I've been a big fan of spicy food for a long time, but I've gone beyond Tabasco. I wanted to get something that I could use every day that wouldn't kill everybody. I occasionally like something super hot, but I think it kills the flavor of whatever you're eating. This is a good, all-around, everyday sauce. I put it on eggs in the morning and hamburgers at night. That's what I was looking for ...

"It goes well with BBQ, which is the kind of food I like."

Perry has also started his own imprint, Roman Records, and signed a band from Memphis called the Porch Ghouls.

"Everything that's good and bad about the industry has happened to this band and a lot of our colleagues - we've all been through the wringer. A lot of the deals out there are designed to screw you. You can give advice to a lot of people, or you can just pick somebody and help guide them along. I hear so many talented musicians and go, 'Well, how come this isn't on a major record label? How come no one's going to hear this?'

"I found this band and I think they're great. So I got behind them and we're going to give them a national push."

Perry says Aerosmith has begun recording a new album.

"Sony has been after us to do a blues-roots record ever since we signed with them," he said. "I think we're ready to do the kind of record that brings it back to where we're all in the studio playing together.

"I don't think we're going to be sitting around trying to educate people about what the blues is. It's just going to bear our influences in a big way. That's the most accurate way I can put it. Everybody's idea of what an Aerosmith blues record should be is going to be a little different - even the guys in the band have different ideas.

"A lot of the stuff we wrote when we first got together would fit on a so-called blues album. So we're getting a body of work, some of the classics, some of the obscure ones, and we're going to see what spikes the creativity.

"It's another challenge for us."

At 52, Perry shows no signs of slowing down.

"Everybody's got their own way of doing it. It would be so easy to be a part-timer - we've done it so much. But I love it, and I'm just so lucky to have an understanding family. It's great - the guitars start at the door. When I disappear for hours and then the music starts rumbling from the basement, it's what I'm supposed to be doing. I can't say anybody else in the band is any less committed to playing - it's really about what they deliver on stage. But I just get on these jags and I have to start pulling out the old records

"What else am I going to do?"

Tyler, who guest-starred as Santa Claus on last Friday's Christmas episode of "Lizzie McGuire" (Disney Channel), helped that show average a whopping 3.4 million viewers. That's up over its 2.3 million average and helped "Lizzie" finish first in total viewers and tops in its timeslot (7:30 p.m.) in most major demos. It also matched its best-ever adults 18-49 ratings.

The episode will be repeated Dec. 22, 24, 25 and Jan. 1.

The tribute started 1:55 minutes into the show, and lasted for 15 minutes. Steven was smiling and having a blast on stage. One of the other highlights was to see Steven and Cher together. He apparently did an amazing job introducing her. You could tell by his facial cues that he was reading it off the teleprompter, but he didn't stumble once.

There's no question that the highlight of the evening was Walk This Way. Steven and Joe really stood out on stage, and the audience really got into it as soon as they hit the stage. That was easily the most recognized of all the songs that was play during the medley. Steven handled most of the vocals.

Chart-topping singers and hip-hop pioneers will be honored at the Billboard Music Awards on Monday night in Las Vegas.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is scheduled to present Cher with an achievement award and comedian Chris Tucker is to present a special"Thriller"award to Michael Jackson, who is not expected to attend.

Cedric the Entertainer is hosting the show, to air live on Fox at 8 p.m. EST. The broadcast will be tape-delayed on the West Coast.

Tyler will join rap stars including Nelly, Busta Rhymes and Ja Rule in a tribute to Run-DMC. The pioneering hip-hop group disbanded last month after DJ Jam Master Jay was shot to death in his New York City recording studio.

The annual Billboard Awards are determined by the magazine's year-end chart listings, which are based on a combination of record sales and radio airplay

The show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas will begin with a performance by 17-year-old Canadian singer Avril Lavigne. Faith Hill, Justin Timberlake and Creed also will perform.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- R&B newcomer Ashanti made an impressive debut at the Billboard Music Awards, taking home eight awards Monday night while rap star Nelly won honors in six categories. The album of the year went to Eminem for "The Eminem Show."

Ashanti, 22, was named the year's top female artist, R&B/hip-hop artist and female R&B/hip-hop artist. She also picked up awards for her single "Foolish."

"It's definitely an honor," the singer said. "It took me such a long time to get me to where I am. I'm just really blessed and thankful."

Nelly was named 2002's top artist, top male artist and R&B/hip-hop artist. He also won honors for his song "Hot in Herre," which he performed after emerging onstage from a massive replica of a stainless steel oven with flames shooting out of its burners.

Puddle of Mud became the first group to sweep all four rock awards since U2 did it in 1992 by winning artist of the year, top rock track for "Blurry," modern rock artist and modern rock track.

Nickelback picked up four awards, including the hot 100 single of the year for "How You Remind Me."

"I think it was not until it really started climbing up the charts. We all sort of went, 'hey I think we can stop flipping burgers,"' lead singer Chad Kroeger said.

"The Eminem Show" is the Detroit rapper's third disc. In winning, Eminem beat out Nelly's "Nellyville," Creed's "Weathered" and Pink's "M!ssundaztood."

The Billboard Awards honor the year's chart-topping artists. Cedric the Entertainer hosted the show, which aired live on Fox except on the West Coast.

The Billboard Music Awards took place live from Las Vegas Monday night on Fox-TV Channel 2, but the telecast had St. Louis written all over it.

University City native Nelly (Cornell Haynes, Jr.) walked in with a whopping ten nominations, the biggest of the night, and grabbed the night's top award, Artist of the Year, besting Eminem, Ashanti, and Creed (Billboard Award winners are determined by CD sales and radio airplay).

Though Ashanti ultimately carried home more awards -- eight -- it was Nelly's night. Nelly also received Male Artist of the Year, R&B/Hip-Hop Male Artist of the Year, Hot 100 Singles Male Artist of the Year, Rap Artist of the Year, and Rap Track of the Year (``Hot in Herre''). It was his biggest payday at an awards show yet.

Nelly began collecting his awards early in the telecast in the rap category. Before accepting those awards, he and the St. Lunatics performed a loose and energetic version of ``Hot in Herre,'' appropriately emerging from within an oven while flames shot up from the oven's burners and on the video projection screen.

His two sets of acceptance speeches were mostly a string of shout outs and thanks. Figuring into his obviously unplanned words were St. Louis, his fans, management, and record label, Billboard magazine, radio stations, St. Lunatics, and City Spud, the St. Lunatic jailed for 10 years on a robbery conviction. Nelly, St. Lunatics, Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes, Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry performed a vibrant tribute to slain Run-DMC DJ Jam Master J.

St. Louis native Cedric the Entertainer (Cedric Kyles) served as host, not an entirely surprising choice given he has a new Fox show, ``Cedric the Entertainer Presents...'' ``I'm from St. Louis, so you know it's going to be getting hot in here,'' the comedian said at the top of the broadcast, referencing Nelly.

Cedric impressively parodied Eminem and his movie ``8 Mile'' as Cedric psyched himself up for his hosting duties, tongue-in-cheekily hoping he could live up to the world's great hosts Bob Barker and Wink Martindale. Cedric did a good, if not gut-busting, job overall.

In accepting her career achievement award, Cher slid the ultimate expletive past censors, which she directed at her critics. It was truly a shock to hear such a word on broadcast TV, and before 9 p.m. at that. ``Give it up to Cher. She's just out there cussin','' Cedric exclaimed. There was also playful yet stiff banter between Cedric and Michael Jackson, presented with an award for ``Thriller'' and its status as the best-selling CD ever. ``I'm a big fan of yours,'' Jackson said unconvincingly to Cedric as Jackson sat next to Chris Tucker at Neverland Ranch. ``I think you're very funny.''

Faith Hill won three Billboard Awards, as did Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback. Other winners Monday included Group/Duo of the Year, Creed; Country Singles Artist of the Year, Toby Keith; R&B Single of the Year (Sales), B2K, ``Uh Huh''; and Electronic Album of the Year, Moby, ``18.''

It looks like actress Liv Tyler is following in her dad's platform bootsteps.

The daughter of outrageous Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has recorded a song for the soundtrack of the third "Lord of the Rings" film, "The Return of the King," due out next year.

In New York to promote the second "Rings" film, "The Two Towers," Tyler told United Press International she recorded "Arwen's Song" a while ago and even previewed it for her dad. The actress, who plays an elfish princess in the spectacular fantasy trilogy, says director Peter Jackson hadn't told her in which of the three simultaneously filmed movies her song would appear.

"I think it's going to be in the third movie," she said. "You never know with these movies... Peter, when he was editing things, felt ... for me, certain scenes were nicer as a finale in the third film."

Tyler wouldn't say much about the song other than it is in English, not one of Tolkien's made-up languages.

Asked to speculate why aging rockers like her dad, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones are still doing so well after decades in the business, Tyler replied: "For me, it's in my genes. I can't comment on the rest of the world, but I just grew up listening to that kind of music. My mom would put Iggy Pop on when I was a little girl, and probably not very many little girls' mothers would do that. So that's what's kind of normal to me."

Tyler says she is as amazed as anyone to see what verve her 54-year-old father shows in his concerts.

"He has got an enormous amount of energy," she explained. "It's rubbed off on me. It's in the genes too, unfortunately, the workaholic gene. He has always been like that. I think it's really incredible. When I see him perform, I definitely am taken aback by it. I'm really impressed by it."

Actress Hilary Duff has a hit TV show, two movies in the works, two hot-selling CDs, a line of books and her own fashion doll. And she's barely 15 years old.

''It's a big shock. I never thought anything like this would happen to me. It's been crazy,'' Duff says.

She may not be a household name, but to the Disney audience, Duff is a tween idol. Duff is the star of Lizzie McGuire, the highest-rated show on cable's Disney Channel. Now in its second season, Lizzie also airs on the Disney-owned ABC network on Saturday mornings.

''Lizzie McGuire is about a 14-year-old girl from Anywhere, USA, just trying to find her way through life,'' Duff says by phone from the set of The Lizzie McGuire Movie, due this spring. ''She has dorky parents she's embarrassed by, an annoying little brother and two good friends who are kind of dorky. There's also animated Lizzie, her alter ego, who is more sassy than regular Lizzie, who says things when Lizzie can't say it.''

Lizzie tackles sweet and mostly innocent teen trials, from her first bra to her first kiss.

In real life, the Houston native is a high school freshman; she's taught by a tutor and loves math. Steven Tyler knows that fans want to hear all of their favorite songs at an Aerosmith concert, and he's got no problem with that. Sure, Aerosmith has been around for 30 years, but Tyler still delivers.

"The people want you to stay with the melody," Tyler said in a recent interview. "They don't want to hear you change it just because you're tired of it."

Aerosmith plays tonight at the Kansas Coliseum. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 concert.

With so many songs that can be classified as hits, it becomes more difficult with each tour to produce a representative set list.

"It's difficult to know what the audience is going to want," he said, "because sometimes we don't know what kind of audience it is until we see it. Sometimes, the audience is all teenagers. Last night was a mixture of ages. In Philadelphia, it looked like nothing but 9-year-olds out there."

As for the quality of performance on this and more recent tours, Tyler said there is no comparison with what people saw and heard in the band's stadium-filling days of the late 1970s.

"We were ripped to the nines back when we played those shows that are on 'Live Bootleg' (released in 1978)," he said. "We were heavily under the influence. We weren't bad, but we were getting off on the drugs instead of getting off on each other."

The whole band is better, he said. Which member in Tyler's opinion has improved the most over Aerosmith's 30-plus-year career?

"My vote is for Joe Perry," he said, referring to the guitar player and frequent Tyler songwriting partner. "He used to hide behind that hair, with those long bangs. Joe is something you don't see in every band. You just don't see that kind of insane musicianship all the time. He is the real deal."

Almost all the band's songs on its first few records were credited to Tyler-Perry. In more recent years, many songwriters have chipped in, leading to the insinuation that Aerosmith uses what Tyler called "song doctors" to create hits.

"It's just as hard to write a good song whether it's with Joe or (outside songwriters) Marti Fredricksen or Richie Supa," he said. "It's birthing. You push it through the birth canal, maybe you birth it in water... it's all the same."

The results have been all the same -- a string of hits. Hooking up its songs with movies, something no veteran rock outfit has done as successfully as Aerosmith, has boosted the band's popularity. Hit movies such as "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Armageddon" and "Spider-Man" have prominently used Aerosmith songs.

Rod Stewart was one of the names Tyler rattled off when asked for his list of the top five rock 'n' roll singers of all time. "Early Rod Stewart," he corrected. "Janis Joplin... early Robert Plant. The Everly Brothers, and Paul McCartney."

Tyler has kept his memory, voice and body in terrific shape, despite years of chemical abuse through much of the '70s and part of the '80s and reconstructive knee surgeries to fix a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

How does he do it?

"You've got to adhere to your dietary needs -- lots of chips and salsa," he said. "And gargling with razor blades."

I was in a bar here in town and they had karaoke. I was looking thru the book and noticed Walk This Way was in there. So I decided to sing it. The begining of the show (the music) seemed to be the Run DMC version, but then after the intro the Aerosmith version took over. The video they played was a bunch of people doing tricks on BMX bikes. The other weird part was some of the lyrics were wrong. I can't remember exactly which ones, because it was a long time ago, but it stuck out. Later I also sang I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. They didn't play the Aerosmith video, but a vid of a couple having supper or some shit like that.

When Darla Willimon-Hawk was a teenager, she sneaked out of her mother's home in Osawatomie and paid $8.50 to see Aerosmith at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium.

On Friday night, two of Willimon-Hawk's children were at the Kansas Coliseum to see the legendary rock band, but they didn't have to sneak out. Their mother was sitting right next to them.

"I have all the old vinyls," said Darla, who now lives in Liberal.

"I have all the new CDs," said her daughter Lindsay.

They joined a sellout crowd of more than 9,500 who filled the Kansas Coliseum on Friday night as the Boston-based rockers brought their 30 years of hard rockin' songs to Wichita.

From the start, it was a nonstop assault of hits with almost no breaks to rap with the audience.

From such classics as "Toys in the Attic" to more modern hits like "Pink," the crowd -- a near perfect mix of middle-aged fans of the band's past and teenagers who enjoy the new music -- got everything it wanted.

Aerosmith performed on a stage that allowed nearly everyone in the arena a good view. In addition to the normal stage setup, extensions reached into the middle of the floor and up to people sitting on the sides of the stage. Band members moved around freely while performing songs like "Sweet Emotion" and "Love in an Elevator."

Aerosmith took the stage around 8:30 after the band Andrew W.K. opened the show. The six-member group tore through a very up-tempo 45- minute set, right after a stagehand came out to introduce them by saying, "How you doin' out there... Kansas City?"

The members of Aerosmith had no trouble figuring out where they were.

"We clicked our heels together a few times and ended up in Kansas," lead singer Steven Tyler said to the crowd during the middle of the show.

For a group of guys in their 50s, the train kept a rollin' all night long. The legendary years of drug use and partying obviously haven't done much to slow them down. They played for more than 90 minutes, and the crowd never sat down.

The showed ended with a blistering performance of the classic "Walk This Way." At one point, Tyler pulled a member from the audience to dance on stage with him.

I've now been told someone spotted something more in the show... In the crowd scene at the beginning of the parade, Teresa and her sister are standing there smiling and clapping - very brief. Also, after the show was over and they cut to commercials...they then came back and had a few outtakes..Steven was in that short piece too.

It was apparently a Brazilian pressing, so it was an import. It looked legitimate though, i.e. not a bootleg. It had the same videos as the VHS. The cover looked similiar to the original, only slightly adjusted for DVD.

On a side-note, both Chelsea and Taj are in the credits, as "bystanders 1 & 2". At least it didn't say DAUGHTERS 1 and 2 LOL. By the way, THAT error went that way via press release to the AP WIRE so every single paper and media source had the SAME error!

It must be the "when worlds collide" theory of television production. Take a show intended for 12-year-old girls whose taste in music runs toward sugar pop. Add the aging, gnarly lead singer of a rock band whose oeuvre includes "Janie's Got a Gun" and "Eat the Rich." Ground the plot in a religious holiday, and put it on the Disney Channel.

That describes tonight's Christmas episode of "Lizzie McGuire," the popular but lightweight family comedy that focuses on the adolescent adventures of its title character (played by Hilary Duff). The fellow in the Santa suit is Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, looking gleeful.

Mr. Tyler, alas, isn't actually around much. His Santa appears briefly at the beginning, but then comes a convoluted tale in which other Christmas shows are gently satirized and Lizzie tries to build a holiday parade float, but learns that the real meaning of Christmas involves plumbing repairs. Mr. Tyler's reprise at the end, though, is worth the wait. His Santa saves the day, and then Mr. Tyler appears as himself long enough to sing a rollicking version of a Christmas classic. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler dons a red suit and hat to play Old Saint Nicholas in a Christmas episode of the Disney Channel's No. 1 tween series. Lizzie, which premiered in January 2001, is one of the few sitcoms created for adolescents that adults can sit back and get laughs out of, too. The show's appeal with viewers between the ages of 9 and 14 rests largely on the fact that Lizzie, as portrayed by Hilary Duff, is a refreshingly normal 14-year-old girl. Though so many of television's young characters are written as miniaturized versions of grown-ups, Lizzie and her best friends, Gordo (Adam Lamberg) and Miranda (Lalaine), are just trying to survive the ups and downs faced by your typical junior-high student. Add in a bubble-gum soundtrack, a fashionably unconventional wardrobe and frequent hip guest stars such as Aaron Carter and Frankie Muniz, and Lizzie wins kudos and ratings as a tween slice-of-life comedy.

Reportedly, two of those Lizzie fans are Tyler's daughters Chelsea, 13, and Taj, 10, who are featured as extras in a parade scene. While Tyler doesn't quite fit the part, he agreed to do the show at their request. Lizzie's smart-alecky review of what he looks like as Santa Claus is "off-the-beaten path, scraggily beard and no gut." But it's a real treat when Tyler, decked out with a candy-cane fedora, sings "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

Even without Tyler's appearance, though, Lizzie still delivers the goods to keep the interest of young and not-so-young viewers. Particularly amusing is a segment that pays homage to several classic holiday specials. It finds Lizzie labeled a Grinch after her "Rock 'n' Roll Xmas" float takes priority over helping a senior citizen. Later, she dreams of being visited by characters from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, A Christmas Carol and A Charlie Brown Christmas. And when Lizzie wakes up she performs a rhyme inspired by Dr. Seuss's famous Yuletide cartoon.

The episode is a perfect little chestnut of an example of how Lizzie bridges the generation gap by mixing the old with the new, creating something entertaining to kids that may likewise make their parents smile. — Megan Walsh Boyle

Aerosmith has never ceased making studio hits; witness Girls of Summer, yet another hit single, this time a bonus track on Oh Yeah, a double-disc of greatest hits.

But the band has also never ceased to be road dogs, and they're out there again, touring right up until Christmas, including Sunday night's show at the Pepsi Center.

Fans have found the band to be as full of energy lately as ever, a notion that guitarist Joe Perry brushes off.

"We're not just playing for ourselves up there. We're trying to get a reaction. That's what we were doing when we were 17 and that's what we're doing now," Perry says by phone from his Boston home.

With its classic lineup still intact - Perry, singer Steven Tyler, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer - Aerosmith has 40 songs worked up for the current tour, changing songs from night to night.

Still, it's a tough time for the band. Both Aerosmith and Run DMC got commercial shots in the arms with their mid-'80s rap/rock collaboration on Walk This Way, and the friendship stayed warm after that. The two groups had just done 30 dates together when Jam Master Jay was recently killed in a New York recording studio. The killer remains at large.

"It was only three weeks since we'd been onstage with them," Perry says with a sigh. "And then we got the news. It's really tough."

The band has always survived - be it drugs, financial ruin or bad albums - and they'll go on now, even in an era that's fairly dismal for rock 'n' roll.

"You can't sit and wring your hands. There's a lot of great music out there," Perry says. "There's a lot of good bands and a lot of good guitar bands, a lot of people playing good rock 'n' roll. You just gotta accept the fact that it ain't the Beatles."

In fact, the band is more inspired than ever. After hearing a blues tribute to Aerosmith, Perry found himself reconnecting to his roots.

"It was funny because a lot of people have said over the years that they like our latest studio album, but when are we going to make them like the old ones?" Perry says.

"It finally dawned on me when I heard the blues tribute record. We've been talking about doing that kind of record for a while. That's going to be the motivation for the next record we do." (Watch for writing and recording to start in early '03, with veteran producer Jack Douglas at the helm.)

Last year Perry said the band was planning on doing a DVD of the current tour, but those plans got put on hold in lieu of the double-CD retrospective.

"We have all that stuff in the can. It's a project that takes a lot of time. We've been on the road and really haven't had a chance to focus on it," he says. The live DVD eventually will see the light of day, but "the next big thing coming out is a 5.1 mix of Toys in the Attic. Jack Douglas is doing it. It sounds amazing. We're hoping we have a release on that for Christmas for that particular record."

Aerosmith would be a prime band for a live DVD or CD retrospective of its performing career, but Perry says that not too much was professionally recorded or filmed during the band's 1970s breakthrough.

"We've done the box sets. I'm not sure how much stuff there is left lying around," he says.

They've found a lot of memorabilia in their archives - recently an associate found a cache of vintage T-shirts, stickers and flyers at a relative's house - but digging up vintage music is harder.

"The only time we actually made an effort to record the shows in a professional way was when we were working on (1978's) Live Bootleg. There's always the odd radio station show and someone coming out of the woodwork saying 'I've got a video of that.' We found a kid way into video back in '72. He's got a whole bunch of footage of us playing live. That stuff turns up every once in a while, but to my knowledge, there isn't a whole lot of it."

Perry has two side projects. The first is his own hot sauce - his answer to the problem of not being able to find good food. It's not the first time he's jumped into the business of food.

"When Steven and I opened a restaurant on the South Shore, there wasn't anything that fit the bill. We didn't want another fish restaurant. We wanted a place where we could go and eat," he says.

Same with the sauce.

"I figured if my name was gonna go on it, it's gotta be good and something I'd use. I always like spicy food. I love to travel and try different kinds of food. It all sort of fit in. When you're traveling around, sometimes the local food isn't the best, so it's good to have something hot in your pocket, you know?" he says.

He also has a new record label, even if Roman Records has only one band signed, The Porch Ghouls. Perry heard their demo and decided "this can't just languish. It's gotta be heard. I'm not interested in having a roster of 10 bands just to have a roster of 10 bands. It's gotta be music I like."

He figures he can help.

"We've made every mistake - twice - that you can make. We've done our part in explaining that. You can help people out and show there are other ways to do this. You don't have to get screwed. The sharks are out there.

"The music industry has changed so much since I've been in it, and a real lot in the past five years because of the whole Internet thing. So not only am I able to help this band out, but it's an education for me, too."

When Jam Master Jay was tragically murdered Oct. 30 in his Queens, N.Y., recording studio, it marked the end of Run-D.M.C., one of the most influential groups in pop music. Several superstars are coming together at the Billboard Music Awards for an all-star tribute to the legendary hip-hop combo. Among the artists slated to appear are Nelly, P. Diddy, Nas, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, who revived their band's career with a 1986 remake of "Walk This Way" with Run-D.M.C. More artists are expected to be added.

Joseph "Run" Simmons, and Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, and Jay (aka Jason Mizell) formed Run-D.M.C. in 1982. The trio landed a number of hits, including "My Adidas," "King of Rock," and "Down With the King." Run-D.M.C. paved the way for a number of rap acts to follow into the mainstream by being the first such group to appear on "Saturday Night Live" and "American Bandstand."

The Billboard Music Awards appearance is expected to be one of the last together by Simmons and McDaniels, who announced the group's retirement shortly after Jam Master Jay's death. Simmons said, "As a tribute to the positive legacy of Jam Master Jay, we started together and we want the Run-D.M.C. legacy to always reflect the three of us together."

As previously reported, the awards ceremony will be held Dec. 9 at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena and will be broadcast live on Fox beginning at 8 p.m. ET (tape delayed on the West Coast).

Comedian Cedric "The Entertainer" will host; Justin Timberlake, Faith Hill, Avril Lavigne, Creed, Nelly, and Puddle Of Mudd will all perform.

Run-DMC were the first rap group to crack the top 10 of Billboard's pop albums chart, so it's fitting the trade magazine will honor them and the late Jam Master Jay at its awards ceremony next week.

Rappers Nelly, P. Diddy and Nas will participate in the tribute, along with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who appeared on that landmark Run-DMC album, Raising Hell. More artists will also be added.

Billboard's December 9 salute will come just five days after Kid Rock, Chuck D and Grandmaster Flash honor Jam Master Jay at the VH1 Big in 2002 Awards (see "Jam Master Jay To Be Honored By Kid Rock, Chuck D At VH1 Awards").

Jason "Jay" Mizell, considered by many to be the most influential DJ in hip-hop history, was shot to death in his Queens recording studio on October 30 (see "Jam Master Jay, Run-DMC DJ, Killed In Shooting").

Cedric "The Entertainer" will host, and Justin Timberlake, Avril Lavigne, Creed, Puddle of Mudd and Faith Hill will perform at the 2002 Billboard Music Awards, which will be broadcast live on Fox from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Nelly leads the list of finalists with recognition in 10 categories, followed by Ashanti with nine, including her contributions to singles by Ja Rule and Fat Joe.

St. Louis' "#1" rapper will compete for Male Artist, R&B/Hip-hop Male Artist and Rap Artist of the Year; Album and R&B/Hip-hop Album of the Year for Nellyville; Hot 100 and Rap Single of the Year for "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma"; and R&B/Hip-hop Single of the Year for "Hot in Herre."

Puddle of Mudd are finalists in five categories, followed by Eminem and Alan Jackson in four and Ja Rule, Ludacris, Usher, Creed, Nickelback and Garth Brooks in three. Finalists are based on sales and radio airplay figures tallied by Billboard.

Cher will receive the Artist Achievement Award, and Annie Lennox will be given the Billboard Century Award at the ceremony.

'Lizzie McGuire' has become a hot Disney brand

LOS ANGELES - "I'm starting to fall in love with this girl," Steven Tyler, the 54-year-old lead singer of Aerosmith, said with a sigh last week. He was referring to "Lizzie McGuire," the Disney Channel's hit cable television show that chronicles the comic perils of a seventh-grader coping with boys, curfews and meddlesome parents.

Made aware of "Lizzie McGuire" by his daughters, Tyler is a fan. "She's like 10 steps better than "The Patty Duke Show,'" Tyler said, recalling the teenage comedy series he watched in the 1960s.

As a measure of his devotion, Tyler will play Santa Claus in the "Lizzie McGuire" episode that is running next Friday, in which his daughters Chelsea, 13, and Taj, 10, will also appear as extras.

Since "Lizzie McGuire" made its debut in January 2001, it seems that many viewers have been smitten. The series has generated one of the biggest new Walt Disney Co. brands in years - one that has already spawned successful lines of Lizzie clothing and merchandise.

Last May, the series, which runs daily on the Disney Channel and stars 15-year-old Hilary Duff as McGuire, was named the favorite television show at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Since September, it has been the Disney Channel's highest-rated show for children ages 6 to 14, and has been the No. 1 show on cable in its time slot - seven days a week at 7:30 p.m. - according to Nielsen Media Research.

"Lizzie McGuire" is especially popular with girls age 9 to 14, the so-called tween category in which marketers place young people who are no longer purely children, but not yet full-fledged teenagers. According to Disney, one of every two girls in that age group who watched television in October saw at least one episode, either on the Disney Channel or on Disney's ABC broadcast network, where it runs on Saturday mornings.

The appeal, in the view of Tyler and many industry analysts, is not only McGuire's affable character, but her tart-tongued animated alter ego, who articulates the kind of real thoughts - like the uncertainty of a school-girl crush or the embarrassment of buying a first bra - that tweeners may be loath to express themselves.

"I mean look at 'Leave it To Beaver,'" Tyler said. "Those people slept in two beds. Nobody believed that. Give me something real. You turn on 'Lizzie,' and she is everything they weren't."

That includes becoming a megaconsumer brand, if Disney's wishes come to pass. Earlier this fall, Disney experimented with a back-to-school "Lizzie McGuire" line of clothing and accessories at the Limited Too, a small clothing chain aimed mainly at young adults. It sold out within weeks. Next spring Disney plans to license a new "Lizzie McGuire" clothing and accessory line that the company will help design and will distribute through the big department store chain Kohl's.

There are also "Lizzie McGuire" pillows, a book series, diaries and stationery. There is a "Lizzie McGuire" compact disc, with some of the songs sung by Duff, which can be heard on the Radio Disney network.

Duff has been in Rome the last two months filming a "Lizzie McGuire" movie for Walt Disney Studios, which may be released sometime next year.

Meanwhile, many fans can be found in the numerous, unofficial "Lizzie McGuire" chat rooms that have sprung up on the Internet independent of the Disney Channel's own official Web site, which features a "Lizzie McGuire" section.

The television show is one of the few Disney cable properties with the heft to compete with Viacom's Nickelodeon, which has long dominated children's cable programming with animated hits like "SpongeBob SquarePants," "Rug Rats," and "Jimmy Neutron."

"It could become their version of 'The Sopranos,'" said Larry Gerbrandt, a senior media analyst for Kagan World Media, a research firm. "Each channel needs something that embodies or defines it."

"Lizzie McGuire" represents a shift in strategy for Disney, which in recent years has tended to rely not on television but on characters in its films - most notably the animated "Lion King" - to drive consumer and other businesses.

"It's a nascent property, but it's indicative of new business opportunities based on television content," said Andy Mooney, president of the company's merchandising arm, Disney Consumer Products Worldwide. "Disney for years has taken the alternative approach. We've always started on the big screen and moved from there."

Mooney and other Disney executives would not say how profitable the "Lizzie McGuire" franchise is, other than to note that cable is becoming an increasingly important revenue generator for the company. (The company's biggest and most profitable cable property is the sports network ESPN, which Disney acquired when it bought ABC in 1995.)

Anne Sweeney, who is president of Disney's ABC Cable Networks Group and who worked at Nickelodeon for 12 years, said the idea for a series like "Lizzie McGuire" had emerged as executives brainstormed original cable television movies for children ages 6 to 11. The movies, including "Brink," a modern retelling of the Hans Brinker tale, have generally been successful.

But Disney's research found that such fare also attracted viewers in the 12 to 14 age group, who had one foot still in childhood and were not yet ready to watch shows aimed at older teenagers.

"That surprised us," Sweeney said. "We looked in the story themes, and we found we had a strong audience of 9- to 14-year-olds. Kids weren't ready for MTV."

Disney decided to develop "Lizzie McGuire" in 2000. To give McGuire's character tween authenticity, the creators devised the counterintuitive approach of using the cartoon alter ego to pop up from time to time to express Lizzie's inner thoughts.

"It's doing a lot of parody," said Rich Ross, president of entertainment at the Disney Channel, who worked with Sweeney at Nickelodeon. "But parody that kids can get."

Sweeney, referring to the pop-up cartoon, added: "This generation of kids have grown up with instant messaging, so it doesn't bother them. It engages them. It reflects what they are thinking when they watch."

In the case of the episode in which Lizzie bought her first bra, "people were wondering why we did this," Ross said. "We want to deal with issues that kids are dealing with today." Besides, he added dryly: "It's television. It's not Partnership for a Drug-Free America."

For his part, Tyler of Aerosmith says that "Lizzie McGuire" is a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. In fact, he said he had only one demand in agreeing to play Santa Claus on the show: that his daughters be allowed to appear as extras, so they could get on the set.

"They wanted to meet someone they thought was famous," he said.

It is official, there will be no New Years Eve Concert in Boston. As many of you know by now, because there would have been an announcement on ticket sales, but also, my roommate got the low down when he bumped into Tom Hamilton at work one day. Not going to give details on his sighting whereabouts, but I got a Aerosmith Wings painting signed by the man himself. He mentioned to my roommate that he couldn't believe that as many fans have heard about the plans for the next album, and that he was really excited for the next project. So, there is some news on Tom Hamilton sighting, as well as some future plans being a definate for the upcoming project.

I just caught the last few minutes of a show called Steel Dreams that airs here in Jacksonville, Florida (I'm not sure if it's just local or national) and it's all about cars and motorcycles and stuff. Well what caught my attention was they were doing a pretty extensive segment on Brad Whitford. They said he "as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, is defenitely one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock and roll." It showed this whole thing about the indoor go-kart race track that he owns in Boston and said it was "the best indoor go kart track in the country, probably the greatest in the world." Then they showed some stuff about his cars, and his career as an Aerosmith guitarist. I found it really interesting, especially since he (along with Joey Kramer) hardly ever gets any attention whatsoever.

This is info about Steven and his two youngest being on Lizzy McGuire this coming Friday.
